In bonding processes and bonding techniques, the open time is the permissible period of time from the beginning of the application of the bonding agent to the joining of the parts to be bonded. This can be influenced by heat, draughts, absorbent substrates and sunlight, among other things.
At low temperatures, there is a risk of condensation forming a thin, invisible layer of ice or water on the substrates. This separating layer prevents optimal adhesion of the sealants to the substrate.
Single-component hybrid, PU and silicone products require ambient humidity to harden which is virtually non-existent at low temperatures below + 5 °C. Water-based sealants such as dispersion acrylates are sensitive to frost when fresh and must not be processed at temperatures below + 5 °C.
Matte and matte-sanded sealants and textured surfaces: When smoothing matte, matte-sanded and textured OTTO sealants, please observe the following: The joints should only be tooled once with a smoothing tool, which was dipped in OTTO smoothing agent. The more often the surface is reworked with smoothing agent, the more the matte effect is lost and the joint becomes glossier. When smoothing matte sanded shades with the matching OTTO smoothing agent, it is not recommended to smooth the joint with a finger, as this presses the sand particles into the sealant and they are no longer visible on the surface. For this application, we therefore recommend our OTTO smoothing tools as the perfect addition.
